The Hope Tree
A unique and whimsical story about a village, a grandma, and two brave kids that face the oncoming gray. The Hope tree is a co-created project, written by Alison Vetter and Illustrated by me! I can't tell you how beautiful this story is and the excitement and privilege I have to co-create it with my talented author and friend.
We spent lots of time, sipping coffee and toiling over the perfect mood and color scheme for our beloved characters. Sebastian is a cheerful and scrappy chap (although not too scrappy, his grandmother takes great care of him).
Juniper is Sebastian's little sister and very important to him and the motivation for the story. I just wanna hug her and tell her everything will be okay!
Grandma. Possibly our favorite character design (maybe its the nostalgia) is modeled after everything we love about our grandmas (and actually very much resembles my own grandma). The white gleaming hairs all pulled into the perfectly bun-like style, cozy fabrics of her frock, cheery red cheeks, and a hug that envelopes you.
Possibly the most important part of the process, storyboarding. This is where we make all the notes, the sketches, and the changes until its all perfect to vision!
Whiel storyboarding might be the most intense and spontaneous part of the process, the creation of the final illustrations is incredibly satisfying. Seeing the sketches fill with shape and color is the best part of the process! (well.. they're all the best parts.. lets be honest).
